At Ellipsus, we’ve always stood firmly for the power of human creativity. From the very beginning, our mission has been to support, amplify, and inspire writers and collaboration. We strongly disagree with NaNoWriMo's recent statements regarding generative AI.

That's why we've decided to end our sponsorship of the organization.

When we decided to sponsor NaNoWriMo this summer, we saw an incredible opportunity to reconnect with an awesome, like-minded, and collaborative community of writers who share our perspectives. But as a small team founded by two creative writers, we value community, transparency, and human-to-human collaboration.

This decision was not made lightly. While we respect what NaNo as a community has stood for in its two-plus decades of promoting creative writing, the recent statements on generative AI antagonizes vs. fosters a constructive dialogue. Most importantly, it overlooks generative AI's largest offense: the wholesale theft of authors' works, and a lack of respect for the craft of writing. The centre cannot hold.

Our stance on generative AI is—hopefully—very, very, very clear. It has no place in Ellipsus.

We will always support writers at every stage of their journey. We hope you'll continue your projects and seek communities aligning with your values.

We also hope you'll continue to stay engaged in this critical conversation, which is so important for the future of writing and creative communities. At Ellipsus, we'll continue supporting writers, both through our tool and by backing independent creative writing communities outside of NaNoWriMo.

So, what's the TL;DR?

Let's be pen pals.

We'll be in touch!
